What is the Harvard Resume Format?

The Harvard resume format is the layout recommended by the Harvard Office of Career Services. It's a clean, single-column, one-page resume that emphasizes readability, quantified accomplishments, and reverse-chronological order. For decades it has been the standard for Harvard students, alumni, and consulting/finance applicants.

    Why adapt it for ATS?

The classic Harvard PDF uses small caps, centered headers, and tight kerning — beautiful on paper but problematic for Applicant Tracking Systems. Our ATS-friendly Harvard resume keeps the layout's discipline while fixing the parts that break ATS parsing:

    • Single-column structure (no tables, no text boxes, no columns)
    • ATS-friendly fonts: Calibri, Arial, or Georgia at 11–12pt
    • Standard section headings: Education, Experience, Skills, Projects
    • Left-aligned dates and locations (not right-aligned tabs)
    • Plain bullets — no graphics, icons, or symbols
    • Saved as .docx and .pdf (both ATS-readable)

    Harvard Resume Sections (in order)

    1. Header — Name, phone, email, LinkedIn, city/state
    2. Education — School, degree, GPA (if 3.5+), graduation date, honors
    3. Experience — Company, role, dates, 3–5 quantified bullets each
    4. Leadership / Projects — Optional for students and career changers
    5. Skills — Technical skills, languages, certifications

    Writing Harvard-style bullets

Every bullet follows the Harvard formula: action verb + task + quantified result.
